The Department of Education offers a major in Education which encompasses the option of eleven different fields. These fields include Primary (Elementary) Education (grades P-5), Adolescent to Young Adult Education (grades 7-12) in Integrated Language Arts, Integrated Mathematics, Integrated Social Studies, Physical Sciences-Physics, Chemistry, Life Sciences, Earth
Sciences and Multio-age Education (P-12) in World Languages: Spanish, French or German. Multi-age Education (P-12) - Music is offered through the Music Department.
The Education major is completed along with a second major in a chosen content area. Students wishing to major in Primary (Elementary) Education (P-5) may major in any major offered by the college.
Students interested middle and high school grade levels will major in Education: Adolescent to Young Adult (7-12) in either Integrated Language Arts, Integrated Mathematics, Integrated Social Studies, Physical Sciences - Physics, Physical Sciences - Chemistry, Life Sciences, or Earth Sciences. Students interested in teaching a world language will major in Multi-age Education (P-12) in World Languages: Spanish, French or German. Students will choose a second major in a specified academic discipline appropriate to the associated licensure area.
Upon graduation, students following this course of study will have completed a double major and earned an Ohio, initial, four-year Resident Educator teaching license making them fully licensed to teach in the State of Ohio. Many of our graduates have also successfully transferred their licenses to other states.
The Department of Education provides opportunities for its teacher candidates to learn and teach within a liberal arts environment that values independence, leadership, inquiry, and global competency. The teacher education program prepares reflective and competent educators for work in classrooms, schools, and a variety of educational communities. The Department recognizes that this preparation is provided in collaboration with all academic departments at Wooster. Throughout the teacher preparation program students are immersed in hands-on experiences with classroom teachers, college faculty, and students. The Department recognizes the importance of effective writing, speaking, and interpersonal skills and strives to encourage its graduates to become educational leaders in a complex and global society.
