The Department of Earth Sciences at The College of Wooster produces liberally educated scientists who address Earth Science problems by applying systems thinking, integrating multidisciplinary methods and knowledge, and reflecting on their roles and responsibilities as scientists within their global and local communities. Our graduates possess a thorough knowledge of fundamental geoscience concepts and the skills to express themselves with clarity, collaborate effectively, and solve problems creatively.
The department offers two majors in Geology and Environmental Geoscience. Both majors are designed for those students interested in the expansive breadth of careers and opportunities related to environmental science issues. In addition, both majors share a set of foundational core courses, followed by a selection of advanced courses in the Earth Sciences or cross-listed disciplines that allow students to pursue their interests and goals. The Geology major consists of a curriculum that prepares students for a variety of geoscience careers in fields ranging from paleontology and natural disasters to energy and natural resources. The Environmental Geoscience major is an environmental science that emphasizes Earth surface processes and interdisciplinary methods. The majors have sufficient overlap so that students can start taking classes without immediately choosing between them.

- Students should consult with their advisor about electives that will prepare them for graduate programs and professional licensure.
- Students who major in Environmental Geoscience cannot also major in Geology, and vice versa.
- Students who major in either Geology or Environmental Geoscience cannot minor in Earth Sciences.
- Majors and minors are not permitted to take any courses within the department for S/NC credit.
