PHIL 29924 - Philosophy Through Film

Course Credit: 1
PHILOSOPHY THROUGH FILM: This course proceeds in two ways: We will watch, write about, and discuss films together; and we will read, write about, and discuss written works of philosophy and film criticism. These activities will be mutually enriching of each other and of our minds, as we develop our critical capacities and our filmic literacy. Themes that we will explore include: a) truth, narrative, and perspective; b) how to live (as a human being); and c) the allure and criticism of fascism. We may view such films as: Rashomon. Tampopo. Spirited Away. A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night. Pan’s Labyrinth. Blue Velvet. The Big Lebowski. La Haine. Parasite. This course is not a good fit for those who are easily offended or disturbed by depictions of violence, sex, or other “mature” themes. [AH]
