URBN 20200 - Cities in Cinema

Course Credit: 1
CITIES IN CINEMA: This course examines the complex and longstanding interrelationship and exchange between film and city. We will watch and discuss a series of films that animate some of the central hopes and aspirations, anxieties, and ruptures that characterize urbanism and architecture throughout the 20th and into the 21st century. Regarding specific historical and geographical contexts, we attempt to illuminate urban spaces through the perspective of cinema. The word “urban” here includes what relates to a city and its spaces and places, residents, and even social, cultural, economic, and political issues. Using a range of visual methodologies, students become familiar with a new academic field in film studies by interpreting architecture, cities, urban spaces, and social issues in Berlin, Paris, Rome, Mumbai, Tehran, Rio de Janeiro, Los Angles, New York, Boston, and other cities around the world.
