MYTHOLOGY OF THE ANCIENT WORLD: A comparative approach to ancient myths with particular regard to how these narrative patterns and religious beliefs recur in other cultures and time periods. Texts vary but may include the Mesopotamian Epic of Gilgamesh, selected ancient Egyptian fairy tales, the Hindu Ramayana, and classical Greek, Roman, and Italian works such as Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey, Hesiod’s Theogony, Sophocles’ Oedipus, Vergil’s Aeneid, Ovid’s Metamorphoses, and Dante’s Inferno.
