This course provides an introduction to classical Chinese, the shared written language of pre-20th century East Asia. The course focuses on reading and translating texts that circulated across East Asia. These texts may include Tang dynasty poetry; historical writings; biographies of monks and nuns; stories of the supernatural; and excerpts from Daoist and Confucian classics. Students will also be able explore classical Chinese texts unique to the Chinese, Korean, or Japanese traditions. Annually. [AH]
