MUSC 16300 - Scot Band/Marching Band Course Credit: 0.13

SCOT BAND/MARCHING BAND A group of performing ensembles with emphases are on several aspects of wind and percussion performance. The marching band requires no audition and functions in the fall semester only with an emphasis on the latest techniques and best quality of appropriate music being prepared and performed. The Symphonic Band is a spring semester auditioned student ensemble, which studies and performs the best in band literature from all periods for performance on campus and on an annual spring tour. The Wooster Concert Band is a non-auditioned group available in both semesters for students and community members; the ensemble studies and performs excellent band literature from all periods, gives one performance each semester, and serves as a laboratory group for music education and conducting students. Two semesters of enrollment in Wooster Concert Band are required for all B.M.E. students. The Scottish Pipe Band and Highland Dancers perform with the Marching and Symphonic Bands, including fall football games and the spring tour. May be repeated. Annually.

RECREATIONAL MUSIC - LEADERSHIP The main focus of this course is students’ development of a repertoire of activities which will provide a foundation for their initial fieldwork experiences. Adaptation of activities and instruments, basic assessment of client interests and needs, and evaluation by observation are addressed as part of the fieldwork that is required as part of this course. SINGER’S DICTION: ENGLISH/ITALIAN This is a rubric course for music majors, especially vocal performers and choral conductors, who wish to improve their capacity to respond with ease, accuracy and expression in foreign languages. The course will offer principles and practice for the singing of repertoire in English and Italian, through poetic readings, International Phonetic Alphabet drills and musical performances. MUSC 29000 - Foundations of Music Education Course Credit: 1

FOUNDATIONS OF MUSIC EDUCATION This is an introductory course for all students planning to pursue teacher licensure in music. Emphasis is on historical, cultural, and social contexts for music education as well as the role of personal expression, arts criticism, and the nature and meaning of the arts in the education of children and adolescents, ages 3-21. Topics include philosophical foundations for music teaching and learning, curriculum planning and development, goals and objectives of music programs, materials, technology, and assessment strategies. Students will also examine the music education profession, its history, and the qualities, competencies, and skills required of music teachers. Clinical experiences in the classroom and field experiences in the schools are a component of the course. Required of all B.M.E. majors. Annually.
