The Department of Earth Sciences at The College of Wooster produces liberally educated scientists who address Earth Science problems by applying systems thinking, integrating multidisciplinary methods and knowledge, and reflecting on their roles and responsibilities as scientists within their global and local communities. Our graduates possess a thorough knowledge of fundamental geoscience concepts and the skills to express themselves with clarity, collaborate effectively, and solve problems creatively.
The department offers two majors in Geology and Environmental Geoscience. Both majors share a set of foundational core courses, followed by a selection of advanced courses in the ESCI or cross-listed disciplines that allow students to pursue their interests and goals. The Geology major is a more traditional Earth science curriculum that prepares students for a variety of geoscience careers in fields ranging from paleontology and natural disasters to energy and natural resources. The Environmental Geoscience major is an environmental science that emphasizes Earth surface processes and interdisciplinary methods. Students who complete the Environmental Geoscience major will be prepared for the expansive breadth of careers and opportunities related to environmental science issues. The majors have sufficient overlap so that students can start taking classes without immediately choosing between them.
