The Bachelor of Music (B.M.) in Composition is a pre-professional degree that prepares students for graduate study and careers as composers. Intensive work in Western music theory and analysis develops musicianship and analytical skills. Applied lessons, ensembles, and musicology courses develop technique and stylistic flexibility across diverse repertoires and cultural contexts. Composition lessons, seminars, and Independent Study foster an individual creative voice, culminating in a portfolio of original works.

Bachelor of Music in Composition
An entrance audition is required, typically at the end of the third semester. See the department’s Handbook for details. The major consists of 24 credits in Music:
Special Notes
- Students considering this degree are encouraged to meet with a composition faculty member as early as possible.
- At least 8 credits must be earned in courses outside of Music (non-MUSC courses). Required courses outside the major differ from those of the B.A. degree (see Degree Requirements for details).
- Dual-degree students (B.M. plus a B.A. in another department) must complete two Independent Study projects, one for each degree.
Special Notes for All Music Students
- Students taking Music Theory I and II are encouraged to enroll concurrently in Class Piano I and II, respectively.
- Students with prior keyboard experience may test out of one or both required Class Piano courses; waived credits must be fulfilled through additional lessons or ensembles.
- Independent Study projects may consist of a recital, written thesis, composition portfolio, or other project.
- Only grades of C- or better are accepted for the major or minor.
