East Asian Studies at The College of Wooster is a multidisciplinary approach to studying the diverse but related historical and cultural traditions of East Asia. Students take courses in history, philosophy, religious studies, sociology, and anthropology, which exposes them to many disciplines and offers opportunities to delve into a particular area of focus. Most students in East Asian Studies spend a semester or more studying in another country, which gives them language skills and connections they can build on after graduation.

The East Asian Studies major and minor are offered through the interdepartmental program in East Asian Studies. Eight faculty members from five departments (six disciplinary areas) contribute to the East Asian Studies Program.

Special Notes

Off-campus Study: As part of the East Asian Studies major, students are expected to complete an approved off-campus study program (or approved equivalent experience) in an East Asian country. Up to three approved transfer credits may count toward the requirements for the major.
Students with Chinese language preparation beyond CHIN 20100 , or who have equivalent preparation in another East Asian language, should consult the program chair regarding how their language preparation will fit into the major or minor.
Students who wish to take the maximum number of courses for this major are encouraged to complete additional courses from the options offered in the major requirements.
Only grades of C- or better are accepted for the major or minor.
