HIST 10106 - Hollywood HistoryCourse Credit: 1 HOLLYWOOD HISTORY In this introductory course, we will analyze American film as an essential expression of American culture. We will be reading movies as documents that tell the story of a time and a place. We will focus on certain genres across time: romantic comedies, westerns, monster movies, and science fiction. We will also focus on understanding the business of Hollywood and how capitalism operates in the cultural creation industry. Coming out of this class, students will be able to explain how High Noon was an allegory for McCarthyism and how the General Electric Theater helped create the persona for America’s first reality-television star president - Ronald Reagan. Annually. [HSS]
