HIST 10101 - India 1857: Imperial RebellionCourse Credit: 1 INDIA 1857: DECIPHERING IMPERIAL REBELLION In 1857, tens of thousands of Indians rebelled against the British Empire. Historians are still divided about how to categorize the conflict - as a mutiny, as a war of independence, or as a revolution. This class explores this debate to introduce students to the process of “doing” history, emphasizing that the discipline is less about “what happened” than about how events were interpreted. Students will gain insight on how to read sources produced in a colonial context and on how to connect their analysis to scholarly debates. Key themes include imperialism, racism, violence, nationalis, and popular memory. [GE, HSS, SJ]
