(COMM, COMS)
GLOBAL CELEBRITY CULTURE Celebrities are an important aspect of our social fabric. Fans are obsessed with what they wear and who they are dating, while segments of the media are dedicated to tracking every minute of their lives for public consumption. Yet, how do people become famous? What is the cultural function of today’s celebrity? What can global celebrity culture tell us about ourselves, and how we relate to distant peoples and places? This course examines the production, circulation, and consumption of celebrity around the world. Drawing on critical cultural studies, we examine celebrity making and consumption, sports, self-branding, and social media influencers. You will also produce creative projects that will allow you to understand the digital practices of celebrities. Prerequisite(s): GMDS-11000, GMDS-12000, GMDS-13000, GMDS-14000 or COMM-11100 or permission of instructor.
