The Department of Earth Sciences at The College of Wooster produces liberally educated scientists who address Earth Science problems by applying systems thinking, integrating multidisciplinary methods and knowledge, and reflecting on their roles and responsibilities as scientists within their global and local communities. Our graduates possess a thorough knowledge of fundamental geoscience concepts and the skills to express themselves with clarity, collaborate effectively, and solve problems creatively.

The department offers two majors in Geology and Environmental Geocience. Both majors are designed for those students interested in the expansive breadth of careers and opportunities related to environmental science issues. In addition, both majors share a set of foundational core courses, followed by a selection of advanced courses in Earth Sciences or cross-listed disciplines that allow students to pursue their interests and goals.  The Geology major consists of a curriculum that prepares students for a variety of geoscience careers in fields ranging from paleontology and natural disasters to energy and natural resources.  The Environmental Geoscience major emphasizes Earth surface processes and interdisciplinary methods. The majors have sufficient overlap so that students can start taking classes without immediately choosing between them.

Special Notes

  • Students who major in Environmental Geoscience cannot also major in Geology, and vise versa.
  • Students who major in either Geology of Environmental Geoscience cannot minor in Earth Sciences.
  • Majors and minors are not permitted to take any courses within the department for S/NC credit.
  • Only grades of C- or better are accepted for the major or minor.
