The Department of Mathematical and Computational Sciences at The College of Wooster seeks to produce liberally educated Statistical and Data Sciences scholars who will gain skills as they navigate our program and beyond, building strengths in communication, ethics, algorithmic analysis of data, data collection, identification of data quality, manipulation, and application of statistical models for analyzing data in order to identify trends and relationships, make predictions, and support data-driven decision making and conclusions.

Special Notes

  • Required Minor: The Statistical and Data Sciences major requires a concurrent minor (or second major) outside of the Department of Mathematical & Computational Sciences (i.e. not in computer science or mathematics.)  This is an essential element for the student to gain traction on how they will use data science in practice.
  • Required Internship: The Statistical and Data Sciences major requires a relevant credit-bearing internship, with chair approval.  Possibilities include the Applied Methods and Research Experience (AMRE) program, an experience appropriate for an APEX Fellowship, a private internship, etc.  This internship may range from 0.25 to 1.00 credits.
  • Because of the significant overlap in coursework, students majoring in Statistical and Data Sciences may not concurrently major in mathematics, and may not major or minor in computer science.  A minor in mathematics is possible, but requires at least one extra mathematics course.
  • The MATH 10200 requirement may be met by an appropriate statistics course in another campus department, such as ECON 11000, PSYC 25000, or SOAN 34100.
  • Junior Independent Study: In lieu of a DATA 40100 course, the College requirement of a third unit of Independent Study is satisfied through the work done as part of DATA 23100, CSCI 23200, and CSCI 31000 or DATA 32500.  Students who wish to complete a significant research project before Senior I.S. are advised to take DATA 32500 in their junior year.
  • Advanced Placement: At most three courses of advanced placement may be counted toward a major, and at most two courses toward a minor.  Advanced placement in Statistical and Data Sciences is available to students who have taken an Advanced Placement Examination or an equivalent furnished by the Department of Mathematical and Computational Sciences.  Students are urged to take the AP examination for this purpose when possible.  A minimum score of 3 on the AP Calculus AB examination is required to receive credit for MATH 11100.  A minimum score of 4 on the AP Calculus BC examination is required to receive credit for both MATH 11100 and MATH 11200.  A minimum score of 3 on the AP Statistics examination is required to receive credit for MATH 10200.  A minimum score of 4 on the Advanced Placement Computer Science A examination is required to receive credit for CSCI 10000.  The advanced placement policy of the College is explained in the section on Academic Policies.
  • Other recommended courses include MATH 21500 (Transition to Advanced Mathematics), MATH 22300 (Combinatorics & Graph Theory), MATH 22900 (Probability & Statistics I), MATH 32900 (Probability and Statistics II).
  • Only grades of C- or better are acceptable in courses for the major or minor.
