ARTH 21100 - Traditions/Transition North European Art

Course Credit: 1
TRADITIONS IN TRANSITION: NORTHERN EUROPEAN ART 1300-1600. This upper-division course surveys the transformative era of the fourteenth through the sixteenth century in Northern Europe. Attending in particular to France, Germany, Bohemia, and Flanders, we explore artistic examples illuminating courtly culture, lay literacy, and the burgher class, as well as developments in late medieval theological and academic contexts. We will investigate how popes, monarchs, and monks- as well as their courtiers, consorts, and spiritual communities- promoted a diverse and vibrant visual culture in light of the following themes: secular and sacred, pilgrimage and piety, identity and empire, east and west, and word and image. Enrolled students may receive credit for either the Medieval or Early Modern requirement in Art History. Annually. [AH, R]
