RHETORIC & CIVIC ENGAGEMENT. This course surveys basic concepts of rhetoric or persuasive symbol use and their intersection with civic life. The course interweaves classical and contemporary concepts to examine how words, images, narratives, and arguments shape our social and cultural identities and impact public life through their influence on our perceptions of social reality, our communication about social and political issues, and the civic and rhetorical roles of a range of publics, from dominant groups to dissenting groups to transnational publics. Topics include: rhetoric as symbolic action; language, visual rhetoric, argument, and narrative as forms of symbolic action; and rhetors, audiences, rhetorical situations, and publics and counterpublics as components of symbolic action.
