EDUC 49901 - Mentoring and Supporting Educators

Course Credit: 1
Maximum Credit: 0
MENTORING AND SUPPORTING EMERGING EDUCATORS The mentor teacher is the key person in the student teaching program. In many cases the success of the teacher candidate is determined by this person. This course mirrors the 15-week student teaching experience and provides additional support and training for mentors as they help the student teachers through their in-classroom experience and guide student teachers in planning and implementing curriculum, advise and support student teachers in developing their personal teaching style, and encourage student teachers to ask questions, have open and honest discussion and dialogue about the professional growth and learning of the pre-service teacher. As the semester progresses, mentors will monitor and assess the many aspects of each student teacher’s growth and are encouraged to challenge, re-direct, question and explain according to the needs of the pre-service student. Throughout the semester, mentors will write reflections related to their role as mentors and complete various assignments that foster a mutually beneficial mentoring partnership. This course is offered to all COW mentor teachers who are working directly with a COW student teacher. May be repeated. Annually.
