GERMAN COMICS & SOCIAL JUSTICE The multiple dimensions of comics make it a unique medium through which to discuss social justice issues. Unlike traditional texts, spatial and temporal fragmentation of social justice themes and visual cues on race, gender, class and ability asks readers to question assumptions, stereotypes and the impact of specific narrative strategies on social justice issues. This course looks at the case of German-language comics, with a primary focus on how comics fundamentally demonstrate the importance of representation, and how they communicate experiences that are often difficult to translate into words alone, such as depression, oppression, trauma and silence.
