RELIGIOUS AND SPIRITUAL AUTOBIOGRAPHY This course studies the many religious purposes (e.g. the understanding of religious experience, formation of religious identity, presentation of a moral or religious ideal, social criticism) that religious autobiographies serve. Such writings also provide readers a window into individual religious lives, experiences, and cultures. Writings selected may include classic Western religious autobiographies such as Augustine’s Confessions as well as other writings, both historical and contemporary, from a variety of religious traditions.
