HIST 27513 - Race & Ethnicity in 20th Century America

Course Credit: 1
RACE & ETHNICITY IN 20TH CENTURY AMERICA This course will explore the construction and reconstruction of race, ethnicity and racism in twentieth-century America. We will examine four major American ethnic groups–American Indian, African American, Asian American and Latino/a American–using a social constructionist approach. Through shared discussions, students will develop a critical understanding of racial conceptualizations, understand how definitions of race have developed in particular historical contexts, how social concerns about race have played out in social, political and economic realms and how each group contributed to American social, cultural, political and economic life.
