ENGL 25005 - Eighteenth-Century Texts: Readers and Meanings


This course studies selected novels, plays, and poems from the late seventeenth to the early nineteenth century, focusing on the transaction between texts and their readers. The course inquires into the ways in which readers participate in the construction of textual meanings and the role of texts in the experience of readers. Works studied will include texts by Aphra Behn, John Dryden, Jonathan Swift, Henry Fielding, William Congreve, Laurence Sterne, Alexander Pope, Anne Finch, Samuel Johnson, and James Boswell.
