ENGL 23036 - The Global and the Intimate: Heartbreak and Masculinity in World Literature

Course Credit: 1
(CMLT, WGSS)
The course will examine the varying ways in which sexuality, masculinity, and desire (and their relationship to normativity) permeate and penetrate in differing and similar ways globally, particularly in contemporary literature. We will be specifically interested in the ways in which empire, power, nationalism, race, and class converge in realms of the domestic, the intimate, and the erotic. Selections tentatively include: James Baldwin, Giovanni’s Room, Orhan Pamuk, The Museum of Innocence, Hisham Matar, Anatomy of A Disappearance, Marjane Satrapi, Chicken with Plums, Allison Bechdel, Fun Home, and Michael Ondaatje, The Cat’s Table.
